Handmade Hereke rugs are very rare and today they are hardly woven anymore, so many are already antique or semi-antique. Due to their fineness and rarity, these rugs are often traded as an investment as well.
Hereke is located approximately 60 km from Istanbul. The town of Hereke is famous for its high-quality carpet weaving and represents the culmination of the entire Turkish weaving and handicraft tradition. The symmetrical carpet weaving knot known as the Turkish Ghiordes knot was also developed here.
The beginnings of carpet production in this region date back to the 16th-17th centuries: the artefacts of the time were influenced by Persian and European decorations from which many elements were borrowed which, however, here were skilfully mixed with the traditional patterns of the region.
It was in the middle of the 19th century that the production experienced a great development, thanks to the specialized techniques in silk processing and the great will of Sultan Abdulmecid who founded here the Imperial Workshop of Hereke (1841/43) with the aim of producing fabrics, curtains and carpets exclusively for the Ottoman court. The establishment of the factory also coincided with the construction of the Dolmabahçe Palace in Istanbul. The Sultan argued that the grandest palaces in the world should also have the most exquisite carpets in the world. For this reason he gathered the best artists and tapestries of the empire in Hereke, and soon the workshop began to produce high-quality carpets, with very refined decorative elements. A specialized workshop was also established in the basement of the imperial palace where workers and weavers from Hereke worked.

How can I identify an authentic hereke rug?
Authentic Hereke rugs usually have a double weft construction, meaning there are two weft threads running horizontally between each row of knots. This construction method contributes to the durability and stability of the carpet.

Most of the Hereke rugs in our collection are manufactured before the year 2000 but they are all new, unused and freshly washed. They have nothing to do with used antique rugs that may even have wear and tear.
They were kept in our warehouse as an investment, as their production was constantly decreasing and thus would be extremely hard to find today. And indeed, today they are considered rare collectible carpets.
