Note: The carpet has a local repair-patch, a common feature for a carpet of this age.
The history of carpet weaving in the region of Turkey - Anatolia begins at least in the 9th century as some findings that have been preserved to this day tell us.
The designs were initially strictly geometric (rhombuses, stars, octagons in thousands of variations), but when the Turks conquered the neighboring Tabriz (capital of the Azerbaijan province of Persia) the designs were influenced by local designers and consequently became more floral and round.
Animals and people however do not appear as in the Persian carpets as the Turks were more faithful Mohammedans and did not represent anything that has a soul.
Anatolian-Turkish carpets were the first carpets to come to Europe as travelers and pilgrims brought them with them as a treasured souvenir.
Thousands of rural families continue to weave carpets today, continuing a centuries-old tradition.

Oriental antique rugs have always been in great demand as an investment value. We mention here some of the most famous and remarkable carpets collections of the Rockefeller or John Paul Getty families in the USA. In art auctions e.g. Sotheby's, Christies or Rippon & Boswell antique rugs often reach astronomical prices. In the 1970s the Persians themselves repurchased old Persian and non-Persian rugs to preserve them as a cultural asset for future generations. Our collection contains some great pieces woven around 1900. Unique rugs like these can yield multiple added value over time.
